Frank & Clara May (Arn) Gifford, and family.........

Clara was born August 3, 1876 in Wyocena, Wisconsin.   She died there Feb. 4, 1958 at the age of 81 from heart problems and a stroke.  She was married to Frank Earl Gifford and had five children. Elmer, Bernice, Gladys, Harold, Howard and Marian.  They were divorced in 1925.  The two oldest children were married.  Gladys and Marian remained with Clara.  Harold and Howard, 15 and 13 left with their dad and went to Florida. The boys drove the car, as grandfather did not know how to drive. The trip was hard and long.  Bad narrow roads at that time.   They broke down in Rome, Georgia. Two fellows walking along the road told them they could fix the rear end of the car.  Given permission, they lifted the rear end up on saw horses.  Went into town and bought parts for another type of car.   After it was fixed it worked fine, but Dad said it roared terribly after that. The above picture with the car is Harold my dad, 16, Frank his dad, 55 and Howard his brother, 14.   Picture was made July 4,  1926.   They left Florida late 28 or 1929 for Texas.  Dad met mother in Alvin, Texas.  Grandfather died in May 11,  of 1936, he would have been 65 June 28th .   Clara made a trip to Houston to see her boys for the first time since 1925 in Feb. of 1937.  Mother had just got pregnant with me at this time.  In 1941, Dad, mom, me and Uncle Howard, Aunt Lucille and Billy made a trip to Wisconsin.  Another in 1947 and again in  1952.  After my marriage in 1955, my parents, sisters Julia and Pat made another trip.  This was the last time they saw grandmother before her death.  The family picture above was made in 1941 when all siblings and their mother were together at one time since 1925.  By left clicking on each picture, the names of each can be seen.

Clara married John Engelhardt, after her divorce from Frank. There were no children from this union.
