Sidney B. Gifford was born August 18, 1832 in Chautauqua Co., New York. HE CAME IN A COVERED WAGON AS A YOUNG BOY FROM NEW YORK TO CHICAGO (THEN A
SWAMP), HE SAID A MUD HOLE. This was probably sometime after 1843. There were nine known children. ALL OF THE OLDER CHILDREN TOOK TURNS WALKING TO EASE THE CROWDED QUARTERS IN THE WAGON..FROM CHICAGO THEY WENT TO WALWORTH CO., WISCONSIN. THEY WERE IN THE 1850 CENSUS THERE. EARLY IN THE 1850'S THEY HAD RELOCATED AT MARQUETTE CO., WISCONSIN.

HE WAS MARRIED TWICE. HIS FIRST WIFE WAS MARIA HOUGH OR HUFF. He had 3 children by her. Ada, Edmond and Henry. IT IS TOLD THAT HIS FIRST WIFE DIED WITH A FOURTH CHILD, SOMETIME AFTER JULY OF 1866. I HAVE DEED OF SALE OF LAND WITH HER NAME ON IT IN THE YEAR OF 1866.HE MARRIED HIS SECOND WIFE IN 1870. HIS SECOND WIFE WAS MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER, MARY ORVILLA SMITH. He had three children by her, Franklin Earl, my grandfather, Bernice, and Florence.
He died July 18th, 1913 and is buried in Portage, Wisconsin.
p.s. He was guarding Washington DC, the night President Lincoln was shot. Wish I knew more about this and the stories he was able to tell.
